Yahoo! Sports released an article recently about 52-year-old Steven Wilson who repeatedly punched his son after the 8th grader's loss in a youth basketball tournament.  Following the tournament, which took place in Lakeville, Minn., spectators intervened when they saw Wilson grab his son by the arm and begin punching him.  Wilson faces a $3,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
I'm sure that many parents and students would agree, actions such as this are absolutely unacceptable.  Is it necessary for a parent to get that worked up over a basketball tournament? In no situation is it acceptable for parents to inflict physical harm on their children.
As an athlete, I understand how important it is to work hard to compete and win, however winning isn't everything.  It's good when parents push their children to work their hardest in anything, not just sports.  The most important thing though is that the children reach their best, and it's wrong for parents to get down on their children if they're doing the best that they can.
I'm a runner, and my dad and brother are my biggest fans.  They do their best to be at my races, give me advice, and when I don't do so well, they tell me good job, or that everyone has bad days and that I'll do better next time.  My dad has never shown any negativity towards me as an athlete, and he would never lay a hand on me.
Many children look up to their parents, whether they say it or not. A parent's support is important to children, whether it comes to sports, school, etc.  Wilson portrayed an immense lack of parent support in his actions.
