Student Speakout: Legalize Love
Advertising
“All you need is love” is a song by The Beatles, if this is true, then why is love illegal? You see it everywhere; teens making out, adults picking out tiles for their new home, senior citizens holding hands. But when you see these things, who are normally doing the actions? Men and women. In this day in age, I would think we as Americans would be more accepting that men and women don’t always have to necessarily fall in love with each other. The girl doesn’t always have to find her prince charming; she could have a happy ever after with a princess. And who says the prince would even want the princess in the first place? Maybe he’d be happier with someone the same gender.

I understand that some religious people think it’s a sin for same sex marriage. Though I was or will never be religious myself, I would think that since Jesus – who supposedly accepting to everything - that he’d want his “children” to be happy and in love, no matter who it may be. To my understanding, Christianity loves everybody or at least accepts everybody. But it seems to me that the people who have a main problem with same gay marriage are Christians or just very overly religious people.

Speaking as a straight female, I have no problem with anybody dating or getting married to the person of the same gender. Like what William Shakespeare said, “love is blind” this holds true, you can’t help whom you fall in love with. Being gay is not a disease that you can pick up on the street; you’re just born with it. You can’t help to be gay any more than you can help being straight. And for the homophobic's out there, gay people are born from straight people.

I think there are a lot more problems that we should be dealing with in this country; job loss, poverty, natural disasters. So why is gay marriage such an issue? We should resolve it as a country and legalize it so there’s one less thing we have to “worry” about. It would solve a lot of controversies and end a lot of battles that are created between people. If gay marriage was legalized what would happen? A third World War, everybody resorts to cannibalism, or even have a huge earthquake? No, not at all. People would just be allowed to get married. To me, if it’s their choice, then they should do whatever they want. If this is a free country, then let’s make it free.
