Below are a few of my favorite movies that I must admit to watching more than once… but why?

Titanic. Most teenage girls love this movie and have seen it countless times (well… I mean… that describes me anyway…). Why, though, would we watch a movie that ultimately ends in total doom of basically everyone we’re watching in the first place? (And it’s not like you don’t know what’s going to happen- people are going to die. It’s Hollywood- but it’s also history and common sense. Tarzan is not just going to miraculously swoop in and save the handsome attractive main character from his demise). Maybe it’s because we know that some people did survive, so we hope it’s the one(s) we actually want to (e.g. Jack- even after about the fifth time watching it, there is still some glimmer of hope that we got a copy of the movie that ends differently and Jack is the one asleep on the door while Rose sinks to a watery death even though that would totally mess up the entire basis of the movie. Oh, whatever. Can you say THE best alternate ending EVER?). Or maybe we just hope that the evil antagonist winds up dead or with his diamond shoved up somewhere uncomfortable or both…

The Notebook. This one is just frustrating- yet it still remains a classic Chick Flick. Why? Well I believe I have the answer to this one. Maybe it’s because half the time we’re basically mentally shouting at our TV screens the entire time “No, you stupid! Don’t go with handsome man #1, Mr. rich, respectable, James Marsden man! The parents dig him so of course you must REBEL! Go with handsome man #2, the whimsical summer romance man with no career! But he’s got abs (see commercial for Crazy Stupid Love) so duhh, best choice!”  The ending’s just plain cute though.

500 Days of Summer. Guy likes girl. Girl dates guy. Girl marries someone else. Wait… what? Why would anyone want to watch something so realistic? Two Words: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He makes a living coming up with card slogans in the movie… who else could pull that off?
