Every four years at Union Endicott High School, the SADD program helps host a mock accident out on the turf. This year it took place on May 25th. The students went through shortened periods and were dismissed from class at 12:20.
I was really worried at the start of the accident because a lot of the students in the stands were goofing around and talking and on their cell phones, but after the first few minutes everyone's eyes were glued to the cars. Mrs. Mullock was also really proud of the entire student body for being so behaved, which she told me and Libby after the assembly.
I personally believe that the mock accident had a very powerful message. The first few minutes were the hardest for me. The calls going through and the screams of my classmates, it was very emotional. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much good the assembly actually did.
It's unfortunate the type of students we have at our school, and even more so the types of kids we have in our society. I don't think that the accident has prevented kids from drinking while driving and it's definitely not going to stop kids from drinking, since on facebook on May 29th there were ton's of new pictures uploaded of students in the senior class at parties the night before.
I will be honest that I used to think it was fun to go out and hang out with people while everyone drank, and I did decide one night that I was going to drink heavily and I got alcohol poisoning and felt like I was going to die. Since then I have not had one sip of alcohol and haven't gone to any parties, unless I got a call from someone who needed a ride home from a party.
I learned from my mistake, and lost someone to a drunk driving accident which is why I DD on the weekends now, but I wish that I didn't make those mistakes. I hope that the students in my graduating class are safe through all of the graduation parties, and stick to their studies in college instead of partying every weekend like most of them do now.
I'd hate to have to add another meaning to "WON'T BE LONG TILL WE'RE GONE"
(quote on the back of the senior shirts)
