New York Times: A Tale of Two Moralities by Paul Krugman
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/14/opinion/14krugman.html?_r=1&bl
This article is about how President Obama thinks our country needs to come together. The journalist who wrote this article does not foresee that happening in the near future. He believes that this country is split.
From what I read it seems that Krugman is with the half that believes taxing is helping the less fortunate. He says, “The other side believes that people have a right to keep what they earn, and that taxing them to support others, no matter how needy, amounts to theft.”
I don’t completely disagree with this statement, but I also believe that people do have a right to keep what they earn.
I know this is not the case in every situation, but a lot of homeless people do not help themselves out. Therefore, I don’t think they deserve the money of those who do work for it.
Take Ted Williams for example. He was offered a job due to his announcing talent. He was given a mortgage for a house and is now in rehab for alcohol and drug use.
Krugman also discusses how there is no gray area between these two sides, which I also disagree with. He even brings up the health care reform. People who do not care enough about there health to change their lifestyles, in my opinion, do not deserve health care. Why give someone a privilege that they are only going to abuse. As I said earlier this is not the case with everyone. I think in order to be eligible for health care, you should have to work.
Although I do not agree with this journalist in most of his views he does have a good point.
“When people talk about partisan differences, they often seem to be implying that these differences are petty, matters that could be resolved with a bit of good will. But what we’re talking about here is a fundamental disagreement about the proper role of government,” said Krugman.
Our issues between the parties are not petty and cannot be resolved with good will. Some people believe that they should be able to keep their hard earned money. Others, mostly people who will benefit from using the hardworking people’s money, disagree with that.
Whether Krugman wants to believe it or not, we all do have the same opportunities. Although we do not all start out in the same place, eventually with some hard work and dedication, you can make it just as far as anyone else. I don’t see why this man believes it should be any different.
Things should not be given to you unless they are earned. If not, no one will appreciate anything.
If I wrote this article I would obviously be on the other side of things.
I do believe that the sides need to be more accepting and less violent but I strongly believe that it is wrong to have things handed to you all of your life. Hard work builds character!
