By Theotis Williams, Jack Yates High School

In today's society, the road to college could be tough It becomes tougher when something like Hurricane Ike comes through. It makes the journey more difficult. Hurricane Ike put a hold on the college process for many students in HISD. Some students were even begging for schools to open. “It put our students behind on the application process,” said Veronica Chapman, counselor at Carnegie Vanguard High School. “Many of our students were applying for early decision.” Students have missed important deadlines that were vital to their plans for college. Most students were planning to take the SAT on October 4, but found themselves missing the registration deadline because of the hurricane. “I planned on taking the SAT in October but I couldn’t because my power was off and I didn't have any other way to register," Jack Yates senior Theosha Randle said. There were a few problems with the ACT, including missed test dates and registration deadlines. Fortunately, the problems were resolved. “Some students were scheduled to take the ACT on the Saturday of the storm,” Chapman said.” Luckily, the ACT quickly rescheduled the test date and the students were able to take the test later.” In an attempt to get their minds back in the books, schools like Sterling High School are preparing to bounce back from Hurricane Ike by having Saturday tutorials. “We are about to start our tutorials to help our students get back in to gear for the SAT,” said A.V. Leslie-Cozart, Sterling’s college bound coordinator. Leslie-Cozart said. Other schools, like Carnegie Vanguard, are also doing everything they can to get back in the mode of preparing their students for college. “We have different colleges making visits to our campus to talk to the students,” Chapman said. “We are also making sure that all of our students have applied to their college choices before Thanksgiving break.”
