The Great Iguana Chase

By Nathan Havens

When asked about her cruise this summer, most of Katherine Havens’ friends and students imagine white, sugar sand beaches, topaz waters, and beautiful seaside sunsets. “For the most part, they’re right,” Havens said. “Until I tell them about being chased by the pack of iguanas.” Mrs. Havens is the new Algebra I and Dual-Credit math teacher at Teague High school this year. However, before she joined students and faculty, she chose to vacation on a cruise with her family this summer. “The cruise was wonderful!” Havens said. “I loved the food, the environment, and most of the ports of call.” However, Mrs. Havens did not enjoy St. Thomas, an isle of the U.S. Virgin Islands, because of the abundant wildlife. “Iguanas were everywhere,” Havens said. “They crawled around on the sidewalk, in the bushes, on the trees – they were everywhere!” Iguana’s natural foods of choice are insects and brightly colored hibiscus flowers, which explained their attraction to Mrs. Havens. “I was wearing floral pink clothes,” Havens said. “Because iguanas have bad eyesight, they thought I was a giant walking flower.” Although rather surprised and unprepared for the paparazzi of reptiles, Havens enjoyed her vacation nonetheless. “It was absolutely beautiful, I would love to visit again,” Havens said. “But just visit, I don’t think I could live with the locals- especially the scaly ones!”
