By Jeffrey Getugi

Junior Carlos Medina, who plays for the Ferris soccer team, is one of Hudson County’s top 20 midfielders, according to his coach Roberto Escobar. Medina finished the season with 12 assists and 7 goals, and was named the team’s second most valuable player. He has been scouted by Kean University, St. Peter’s College, Seton Hall University and Rutgers University. Ferris made it to the state playoffs, but lost 2-1 to St. Peter’s Prep, the best team in the county, on October 4. Medina said that was Ferris’ toughest ever. Ferris finished the season with a record of 7-9-2. “The season [was not] so good, but we are going to get better,” Medina said. Medina also scored Ferris’ only goal in the county semi-finals against Kearney, which Ferris lost 3-1. “It was really good [to score in that ] because it was a county , and in like this, there are plenty of scouts,” Medina said. Medina said his best this season was against John F. Kennedy Memorial High School when he scored two goals and had three assists. Ferris scored seven goals that day, beating Memorial 7-2. Escobar said that Medina contributed a lot to the team this year, despite having “a lot of pressure on him.” “Being captain of both junior varsity and varsity is not easy at all,” Escobar said. “He helped the team in many ways. Mentally, he helped the team by cheering them up and keeping their head in the .” Nevertheless, Escobar said he expects more from Medina next season. “Next year he will continue to be captain of the team, and I have a lot of work to do with him because he is being recruited by colleges,” Escobar said. Medina said he is already looking toward next season and thinking about how he and the team can improve. “I need to score more and help the team out and not be selfish,” Medina said. “I hope for the team to win the county championships for the first time in Ferris history.”
