Great Role Models

By Jessica Ybarra

Maestros en Mosaics painted a mural of Henry Trost, which is located in the front office of the main building. Henry Trost was an architect who designed about 500 buildings in our area. Most of them were designed for Arizona, New Mexico, and Trans-Pecos Texas. Trost designed Loretto High (an all girl school in El Paso), Jefferson High School, and some original buildings at UTEP and La Tuna. Trost also designed the Turnley house, which is now the El Paso Museum of Art. He also designed El Paso High and the original building here at Gadsden High School on a handshake during the Great Depression for a very reasonable price. Trost never had kids because he was a workaholic;he later adopted some on his own. He took in his nieces and nephews after one of his siblings got sick. Even though he had a very private life, he still took them in his home and raised them as kids of his own. Trost owned a home that he designed; the house, which is located on West Yandell Drive Façade, is now owned by Malcolm McGregor. Henry Trost died in 1933. Most of his buildings are still standing, and many have become historical markers like our school. According to Mrs. Holzhousen, the reason Maestros en Mosaics used Trost is because they were searching for a local role model who contributed to, or attended, Gadsden High sometime in our 77-year history. Henry Trost was chosen as the first example; the more they found out about him, the more they learned about how he contributed to our community. He is considered the "master architect" of the southwest. Maestros en Mosaics is looking for another role model. This role model has to be a female Latina who has contributed to, or attended Gadsden High School. If you would like to nominate a Latina, contact Mrs. Holzhousen at 882-6349, or e-mail her at holzhousen@gisd.k12.nm.us. The person whose nominee is chosen will receive a $500 savings bond! The last person to win was Ms. Romero who nominated Agueda Mora. If you have any questions about nominating a candidate, see Mrs. Holzhousen in room 226 in the North Building. There is a bulletin outside her classroom; she will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
