Outdoor classroom's construction begins

http://my.highschooljournalism.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/642/articleid/122405/outdoor_classroom39s_construction_begins.aspx

By Tyler Trussell, Reporter

Construction on the new outdoor classroom between the rooms of teachers Patricia Fels and Daniel Neukom, which has been halted for several months, has recently resumed. Neukom attributed the halt to a lack of quality: “Originally, [the outdoor classroom] was to be made with existing materials, but it quickly became obvious it wasn’t going to be of high-quality construction,” he said. To upgrade the materials for the project, Neukom and Fels donated $500. The fencing materials Jon Osterlund, director of the physical plant, ordered with the donation were delivered on March 7, and construction on the fence surrounding the classroom started today. Neukom’s plan is designed to hold about 15 students seated on metal or fine wooden benches in a semi-circle. The ground will be covered in crushed granite or another form of pebbles. He hopes that having the outdoor classroom will “save the grass [in the high-school quad] and the posture of the students.” The classroom will be used for clubs, classes, and C-Day meetings—weather permitting. “I think people would be very creative [with potential uses], given the opportunity,” Neukom said. Osterlund said the next step is for Neukom to decide which style of bench will be installed, However, he noted that more money must be raised before the project can proceed.
