By Jordan Yulich

The returning state qualifiers hope to lead the tennis team to another state berth. The team is led by junior Charlie Moffet and senior Jack Hull; both returning State qualifiers in doubles. “In doubles Charlie and I have qualified for State,” Hull said. Blaine Kaehr picked up a racket for the first time 18 months ago, and in that short time he has become a varsity member on the Free State team. “I really wanted to play and after I started, it just stuck,” Kaehr said. “I play everyday and hard work pays off.” In doubles the team achieved one of their season goals by defeating cross-town rivals LHS. “We are hoping to defend our regional state championship,” head tennis coach Jon Renberger said. The boys feel they have fun, work hard and play even harder. “We get along great and have fun all at the same time, but we perform well,” Blaine said. The tennis team has a “very tough” schedule this year Renberger said, “But it offers all members of the team extensive opportunities to play and develop.” Like every other year, the toughest teams are from Shawnee Mission East, Olathe Northwest, Olathe East and Blue Valley North, according to Renberger. “The team is performing well but there is always room to improve,” Moffett said.
