CD Review: "Clear as Day"

By Monica Lorenzo

American Idol winner Scotty McCreery's first album "Clear as Day," released on Oct. 4, shows how much potential a young man can have with country music. At 18, McCreery's deep, soothing voice seems to take him beyond his adolescence. McCreery's country genre adds up to the diverse styles of music from the previous Idol winners. Songs in the album tell a story of their own, each describing a scene that relates to the young artist's life or point of view. Thus, this album could be a pleasant and entertaining autobiography about McCreery. The album features McCreery's Idol coronation song "I Love You this Big," which is about typical teenage love. Other love songs in the album include "TheTrouble with Girls," "Better than that," and the title itself, "Clear as Day." The sugary, yet sincere lyrics to these songs prove that McCreery does a nice job of trying to win a girl's heart. In addition, the instrumental background to these songs has a soft, slow tune that is a perfect complement to the artist's smitten emotion. Although "Clear as Day" mainly consists of young love and infatuation, we hear about the other side to McCreery prior to his fame on "American Idol." Some songs also describe him as the ordinary country boy from North Carolina. But the overall sounds and lyrics of these songs makes the artist, and the whole album, rather extraordinary. Country music, I'd say, has never captured this generation of urban young people, mainly are interested in other genres of music, like rock, rap, or R&B. "Clear as Day" is very impressive for an Idol winner's first album. The meanings of the songs prove that McCreery has got a great talent and devotion to the singing career that he deserves. So if his first album is a successful fresh start, there is no doubt that McCreery's future work will also be loved by fans..
