The season winding to an end, the women’s basketball team is hoping to finish on a good note. Stumbling on a losing streak and bad play, the Warriors have found themselves looking on some younger players and a few seasoned veterans to help the team stay competitive and finish strong. Coming off a winless streak of seven games, the Lady Warriors beat Roosevelt Tuesday, Feb. 7 to end the streak and bring their league record to 4-11 overall. With such a disappointing season, coach Gaye Chapman believes they could have done better. “It’s disappointing, we expected to win a couple more games,” Chapman said. Such thoughts are echoed by members of the sputtering team, but rising star Claire Groth believes team unity has not been affected. “We’ve worked hard as a whole, through all the tough times. We have still bonded and stayed close,” she said. Veteran players Grace Neal and Mia Skolnick have been leading the team through the tough stretch. Neal, a senior, has continued to contribute to the team with her great defense, and what is described as “tremendous energy and excitement,” by coach Chapman. Skolnick, also a senior, has put in her share of hard work for the season. She is currently up for first team all-league honors, but her first team bid could be harmed due to the recent shortcomings of the team. There are also other positive aspects of the season. Although Chapman believes that some of the veteran players have not been putting out an optimum amount of effort, it has created opportunities for younger players to step up and prove they can play. “I’ve seen great improvements in some of the younger players,” said Chapman. Chapman commends Groth for stepping up and being “consistently intense.” Freshman Schular Jefferson has also seen adequate playing time and is looked at as a future standout for the Lady Warriors. With such a disappointing season, the Warriors are looking to keep their heads up and finish the season on a good note. With three remaining games left against Madison, Wilson, and Lincoln, the team is looking for a bit of last minute success and would appreciate some student body support. ]]> Wed, 01 Mar 2006 19:40:00 GMT
