Simply Irresistible?

By Meredith Murff

Facebook and Twitter are social networking sites. In the past three years Facebook and Twitter have affected the way people communicate. Almost everyday there’s a student on his or her iPhone searching the Internet and checking Facebook or Twitter all around school. Sometimes students are allowed to be on their phone or tablet, but other times in the halls they just want to update their news. Could it be addictive? Some people may think that Facebook or Twitter is “irresistible”, and others delete their account during the school year so they aren’t multitasking the “wrong way”. According to News Media’s official web site, most people may fail to resist social media. This site also says that this past February, Facebook reached more than 845 million active users. An eighth grade Oakbrook survey revealed that only six out of twenty-six students don’t have a Facebook account and that Twitter has less “followers” in this grade than Facebook. The survey showed that fourteen out of thirty-two 8th graders do use Twitter, but that twenty-nine students prefer to visit Facebook. Another question asked on the survey was whether or not students log onto Facebook or Twitter before starting homework. Surprisingly, the results were close. There were sixteen votes yes, while fifteen were no. The same survey also asked if students have a smart phone, iPad, tablet, etc. that can access Facebook. Twenty-eight students said yes. Of the 8th graders polled, only four out of thirty-two don’t have a way to access Facebook anywhere. For those who do have easy access, how much do they "get on" a day? The poll says the time ranges from about two minutes to three hours a day on Facebook. People may think this is normal, while others say it's completely insane to be on Facebook for just two minutes or way too long to be on for three hours. There are even websites you can go to for trying to get rid of your Facebook and Twitter “addiction”. Most websites like this say that Facebook and Twitter are more addictive than drugs or alcohol. All in all, Facebook and Twitter can help you connect with your friends, but if you use them too much, they could be addictive.
