By Ashley Camaraza/Staff Reporter

photo illustration by Amilynn Soto

The summer movies of 2009 have been a su c c ess as far as entertainment. Many movies this summer in c luded lots of a c tion and c omedy. ‘Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen’ w as a great w ay to start off the summer. Not only did it involve lots of a c tion, it w as also very c omi c al. There w ere also many surprises that many people did not expe c t. Another good a c tion movie was ‘GI-Joe: Rise of Cobra’ It was just your average “bad boys take over, good guys stop them and get the girl” movie. The movie didn’t do well at the box office and some say it was just a giant commercial for the action figures. Nevertheless, ‘Rise of Cobra’ had the good looking Channing Tatum and funny guy Marlon Wayans. Additionally, it contained good graphics to keep the audience entertained with action-packed goodness. In contrast to his first movie, ‘Borat,’ which made Sacha Baron Cohen well-known, his most recent movie ‘Bruno’ did not get the same reaction from audiences as the original. Most of the audience found it more offensive than comical. A movie that did sit well with viewers, however, was ‘The Hangover’ starring Bradley Cooper from ‘He’s Just Not That Into You.’ What happens when a bachelor party goes wrong in Vegas just two days before the groom’s wedding? This movie will give you at least one scenario. The humor used in this film is similar to ‘Superbad.’ A movie that was not really talked about ‘Julie & Julia,’ was the story about Julia Child, the culinary pioneer who died a couple of years back and Julie Powell a blogger who attempts to use child’s recipes in her everyday life. Starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell, this movie intertwines these two animated lives and culminates in one timeline of culinary frenzy. Streep’s performance was so captivating some are even saying she should be nominated for an Oscar. ‘The Ugly Truth’ brought out many laughs in the theater. This movie, about two people with opposing views on love who gradually fall in love with each other was a great hit at the box office. It starred Katherine Heigl (‘Grey’s Anatomy’) and hunky Gerard Butler (‘300’). Summer isn’t the only time for good movies; there are many more coming out this fall and winter. Do you remember when you were little and you would watch a movie called ‘Toy Story’? This hit animation movie and its sequel, ‘Toy Story 2,’ will come to theaters in 3D on October 3. This movie will bring nostalgic feelings for you and leave a smile on your face as you walk out of the theater. Based on the children’s book, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ hits theaters October 16, and many people are anticipating its arrival. Even those who did not read the book as a child want to see how a child creates a world in his imagination where ferocious wild creatures roam the land. Releasing November 6, ‘A Christmas Carol’ remake starring Jim Carrey will use the same technology that ‘Polar Express’ used a few years ago. Following ‘A Christmas Carol’ is the apocalyptic movie ‘2012’ which is being released November 13. Starring John Cusack, this film will show us what is possibly going to happen in the not-so-distant future, according to the Mayan calendar. Coming up a week after ‘2012’ the second installment of the Twilight Saga, ‘New Moon,’ will be released. This is a continuation of the bestselling Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer. You’ll be seeing a lot more of Taylor Lautner than in the first movie, and, ladies, he’s packed! Catch Jacob, Edward, Bella and all the other vampires on November 20. Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones,’ based on the novel by Alice Sebold, is to be released December 11. The story depicts life after death and what happens with the people left behind. Coming to life December 18 is James Cameron’s new film ‘Avatar.’ Cameron has not directed a big screen movie since ‘Titanic’ and fans are holding their breath to see if he can top his award winning film, which to this day is still the number one box office movie ever. That’s about it for the fall and winter movies. Make sure to watch at least one of them coming out soon.
