Monday Classes Cancelled Due to Power Outage

By Larry Breen

So what exactly happened Sept. 19 at the high school? It's a complicated story, but the basics are this--early that morning a storm rolled through the Waco area with lightning strikes blanketing the area and frying some wiring in the high school kitchen area, leading to some smoke and power failure in parts of the building. Firefighters were called to the scene, and ISD administrators joined those on campus to assess the situation as they had faculty and staff herd all those arriving by the football bleachers. After a few minutes of discussing alternatives, classes were cancelled for the day with full power not available a few hours around the building, and buses were called to return students home while others called for rides. Faculty and staff helped supervise the process and met briefly in front of the school, where they were told the day would have to be made up in the future and given the option of working on their own at school or at home, and as expected, most chose the latter. However, full power was restored shortly, and students had an unexpected one-day vacation. Although the underclass photo day was also cancelled (to be rescheduled at the earliest opportunity), everything returned to normal by the next day. An interesting sidelight to the story is that a gas leak was called in across the street from the Primary School around lunchtime, so the administrators came up with a plan to have the firemen inspect the line. They recommended the students be evacuated as a safety precaution by bus to the high school to eat lunch and sort out their rides home with the help of administrators, faculty, and staff, according to assistant principal Lisa Seawright.
