By Maggie Henderson

Despite the absence of a coach, the women’s tennis team is prepared to take on the season. Expected coach Robert Walker, Spanish teacher, had to resign for family reasons soon after tryouts were held. Last year’s coach, Joe Habes, has taken over as head coach of the men’s varsity team. The women’s team of 19 is currently under the lead of senior captains, Maria Culp and Sarah Neuman. Both have been on the varsity team since their freshman year. Coming off a two-year repeat of 8-1 season records, and a PIL title in 2005, the Cardinals at hoping to repeat the 9-0 season they had in 2003. “We have a great team, and I am looking forward to the season,” Culp said. “We hope to win Districts again and have a lot of representatives at State.” The group consists of three upper class-men and 16 underclassmen. “We have a young team,” Neuman said. “We are just focusing on getting stronger so we can win the PIL title again.” With 12 returning members and seven new recruits, the team is a good mixture of new and old. “Our biggest competition this year will be Grant,” sophomore Michelle Benikov said. The Cardinals have lost to the Generals the past two seasons, flawing their otherwise undefeated records. “It’s time we show Grant what we are really made of,” Culp said. “It would be great to finally put them in their place.” The next match will be today at Sunset.
