By Angela Frey

Angela Frey
Senior Dena Hillison sings her heart out at Coffeehouse

At Coffeehouse, one can hear all kinds of music. Some are renditions from popular artists and some are from the minds of talented students. Coffeehouse is a place where students show their talents, whether in playing an instrument or singing. Many students chose to write their own lyrics and music, preforming them in front of the crowd. Many bands participating in Coffeehouse are known for their original music, such as TRUTH! and Gypsy Tears (covered in Periscope’s first issue). There are also other participants who write their own music in this winter’s Coffeehouse. Catlin Walton,The Dunch Band, Shadab Agabudhabi, ¡Las Pulpas!, The Hittie Brothers, and Tom and the Fooleries all have at least one song that they’ve written. Writing lyrics is a challenging thing, as sophomore Cassie Jacobs revealed. “It’s always challenging. Sometimes, you come up with a tune and you put words to it or you come up with words and then put a tune to it or you take something, scrap it, and then come back to it.” However, the work pays off. Students get a chance to show off what they’ve written and entertain their friends. Of course, that can also be a very scary thing for some people. “It is a lot more intimidating when we preform our own original songs...because you get a personal attachment to your own songs,” senior Dena Hillison said. Even with the pressure of preforming in front of one’s peers, it is a very satisfaction experience for a person when they succeed. “It’s really exciting knowing that the song is fresh and new to them and that we are presenting our own style and hard work.” “[Students writing their own lyrics] is the best of all possible worlds,” Coffeehouse supervisor Susan Biondo-Hench said. “It’s their performance and it’s great when they make something their own.” Coffeehouse will be performing this Saturday, Jan. 30. Be sure to stop by for some music from popular artists and peers.
