By Ashley McGlasson

Rueters
A suspenseful scene in the film capturing the actor’s right after they have established “super-human” powers.

Suspenseful, science fiction film, Chronicle, hit the big screen on February 3, 2012, leaving the audience with a bad taste in their mouth. A case that tried to establish a successful film didn’t work out too well. As the story begins, one of the main characters, Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan), is featured in his bedroom with a new video camera in attempt to record the rest of his life. Throughout the film, the cinematography is then featured through Andrew’s camera. If a shaky, roller-coaster view is what you’re looking for, it will be enjoyable; if not, save yourself the headache. Andrew’s cousin, Matt (Alex Russell), attempts to improve Andrew’s social life and invites him to a Rave; they meet up with another friend, Steve (Michael B. Jordan). Their performances were highly believable; as they fit their roles well and brought life to the characters. The next morning, all three teenagers met up and explored their new “super-human” powers, caused by a blue figure discovered in the hole. Once they have trained their powers with their muscles, they decide to use them out in public; the camera catches everything on tape. Instead of using them for good, the boys start by playing tricks on little girls, and end up endangering an impatient driver, putting him in the hospital. The story becomes highly suspenseful, keeping you on the edge of your seat because of how the action scenes are set up. DeHaan’s role was very edgy; he brought the idea of a predator to life. “I am an Apex predator. Does the lion feel bad killing the gazelle? Do people feel remorse when they kill a fly?” said DeHaan. The director’s attempt at a well-loved Hollywood film needs a second try. The movie was not the worst film ever produced; however, there is much needed room for improvement. Chronicle has excellent potential to become something much greater!
