Teacher Stephanie Jacobs lunges for the frizbee during the national championships in Florida.

Stephanie Jacobs is known as a chemistry teacher at Parkview High School, but outside of school she is a dedicated member of The Chad Larson Experience, a competitive Ultimate Frisbee team that has made it to nationals five out of the six years the team has been in existence. But every champion needs a place to start. Jacobs first began playing Ultimate in 2001 at Missouri State University in an intramural league. “I fell in love with it,” said Jacobs. “I literally played Ultimate everyday for my first two years of college. I knew I didn’t want to quit after I graduated.” Jacobs decided to play on an Ultimate Frisbee Club team, and it was only a matter of time before she found the right one. The Chad Larson Experience (also known as CLX) is a team that is based out of Aimes, Iowa. The players are dispersed throughout the Midwest in a total of four different states: Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Missouri. Jacobs has been a member for one year now. Despite the distance, the team still manages to become prepared for nationals. “We play one major tournament a month together, which essentially serves as our practice,” said Jacobs. “Everyone also tries to play or workout at least three times a week, respectively.” According to the USA Ultimate Board of Directors, Ultimate Frisbee is a player defined and controlled non-contact team sport played with a Frisbee on a field with end zones. The sport combines the non-stop movement of soccer with the passing skills required in football. It consists of two seven-player teams trying to catch a pass in the opponent’s end zone, which results in one point. Players must stop running while in possession of the Frisbee and pass to a fellow team member. Pivoting is allowed, but the Frisbee must be passed within 10 seconds. There are no referees in the game. Ultimate Frisbee uses an ethic called Spirit of the Game, which places the responsibility of fair play on the shoulders of the players. Nationals for the 2010 were held Oct. 28-31 in Sarasota, Flo. The top 60 teams in the country across four divisions (open, women’s, mixed, and masters) competed in the 2010 USA Ultimate Championship. CLX took third place in the mixed division. “Our goal was first place, but third place was definitely an honor. We played very well!” said Jacobs. Jacobs has expectations for the game to thrive. “It is a growing sport- I would like to see an Ultimate Frisbee team formed at Parkview,” Jacobs said.
