Is public school the best educational and social option?

By LYNDSEY MYERS and LAINEY HUBBS

YES: Public school offers educational and social opportunities. Public schools give students the experience and knowledge they need to succeed in life. Teachers at public schools are more likely to have a higher qualified education than private and home school teachers. According to about.com, public schools teachers have a better education than private schools and are paid higher salaries. Teachers at private schools and home schools don’t need to have certification to teach. There are stricter rules for teachers in public schools so they have to be more educated than private and home schools. Classroom experience is also a benefit of public schools. In public schools students will find a more diverse group of students. Students get the opportunity to work with others their age and deal with the frustrations of interacting and communicating with classmates. Everyone has had that one lazy group project member who doesn’t want to do anything. These experiences are beneficial because they prepare students for problems they may have in future jobs and careers. It would be nice to get to sleep in everyday, but that’s not what real life is going to be like. People who don’t have the practice with dealing with others will find it hard to suddenly join the world when they go to college or get a job. The public schools experience gives students practice in dealing with people. Extracurricular activities are also benefits of public schools. Sports, theatre, art, music, photography, newspaper, and foreign languages are just a few of the many activities offered by public schools. Students profit a lot from these activities. They can learn and have fun at the same time. Public schools bring many opportunities for everyone. NO: Granted, public school offers diverse electives and clubs that other schools do not, but that does not make it the best educational and social option. Many parents choose to enroll their children in government-funded schools. Although public education has apparent advantages, such as being tuition-free, its disadvantages must also be weighed when making an informed decision. Some of the disadvantages associated with public school are: bullying, overcrowding, and limiting self-expression. The bigger the school, the more problems. Since public schools contain hundreds to thousands of students, the classrooms are often filled with more students than is recommended. As a result, individual attention has been more scarce. It seems right to assume that since public schools are subsidized by the government the students attending those kinds of schools learn more. According to John Stossel, host of Stossel on Fox News Business Network, academic performance is not linked to the amount of funding schools receive, because students do not learn better with increased funding. Some parents have sought out other educational opportunities for their children. Some options include private school and homeschool. At private school, social interaction is monitored more carefully and since there are fewer students on average, individual attention is more readily available. The homeschooling option allows students to work at their own pace, form their own opinions, and often have more time to dedicate to extracurricular activities and hobbies. It is important to keep an open mind to all available options when considering different schools. The education decision must meet individual needs and cannot always be satisfied with public school simply because it is the obvious decision.
