By Lindsay Scarberry

“Dear John” is a romantic movie based on one of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novels. The film follows Special Forces Army Sergeant John Tyree, played by Channing Tatum, and college student Savannah Curtis, played by Amanda Seyfried, as their romance grows. The motion picture is rated PG-13, and has the perfect amount of romance and drama. Savannah comes from a rich family, while John is just middle-class. John has a history of trouble making, while Savannah is flawless. After the 9/11 attacks make John’s military future more complex, he has to choose between being home with his love, Savannah, and re-enlisting to serve his country. A series of “Dear John” letters keep the two together for some time, but it is an obvious test of fate the longer their time apart grows. The movie follows along with the novel well. However, some events and scenes that made the book wonderful were not included in the movie version. With that aside, those who enjoyed the book will also enjoy seeing this film. The characters and plot are believable and pull people in, as both readers and movie goers. Viewers will become deeply involved with the plot and become more emotional the longer the movie goes on. This romantic film is a definite tear jerker, and viewers will need nothing more than a box of tissues.
