Lower gym to close, convocation to change

By Annie Floyd

Renovations of the lower gym and cafeteria are next on the list of areas to be redone. Work on the cafeteria will not be started until after school gets out, however, the lower gym will be started over spring break and is scheduled to be finished by mid-August, in time for the start of fall sports. “It will look like a brand new gym,” Renovations coordinator Bob Robyak said. The gym will be sealed off and shouldn’t affect the flow of traffic by the rock entrance and into the cafeteria, he said. However, the lower gym renovations will cause changes in venue for student events and classes. Convocation, usually held in the lower gym, will have to be held in the auditorium or upper gym, where half the number of people will be able to attend. “Convocation symbolizes a wrapping up of high school, it’s ironic that construction continues to effect it,” senior class president Cosmo Fujiyama said. “Besides graduation, it is the one last assembly. It completes the circle that started with the (first day/ week???) assembly and ends with convocation. Unfortunately there are lots of obstacles to overcome with it.” Another option suggested by Principal Don Weinheimer, and currently being considered by the senior class is to hold convocation outside, Fujiyama said. However, that option poses obstacles such as weather and lack of a good sound system. “It’s a nice thought,” Fujiyama said. “But none of us have made a clear decision.” Gym classes will have to be moved as well. In addition to the two common areas of the school, classrooms on the odd sides of the gray and orange hallways will be renovated, as well as two science labs in the yellow hall and the writing lab in the red hall. However, this can’t begin until after classrooms currently being renovated on the odd sides of the blue and even side of the orange hallways are finished. Their completion is scheduled for mid-April. At that point, teachers will move back into those classrooms from the trailers and other areas of the building, classes in the gray and orange hallways will be vacated, and teachers will move into trailers and other areas of the building. “Working with renovations has been extremely hard,” Fujiyama said.
