Akron Beacon Journal photo by Mike Cardew

The Revere boys soccer team lived up to its nickname, the Minutemen, at the regional finals Saturday. The Knights, who finished the year 12-8-1, lost 2-1 to Revere in the final minutes of the game. With around 2 minutes left and the game tied 1-1, Revere got a corner kick. Players on both sides went for the ball, when a Revere player kicked it. All the fans fell silent, then the Revere side erupted. The Minutemen (13-7-1) had scored what turned out to be the winning goal. Hoban was unsuccessful in its scoring attempts before time ran out. Junior David Mason scored Hoban's only goal. Earlier, Hoban beat Norton 5-0 at home Oct. 23 and St. Vincent-St. Mary 1-0 away Oct. 26. In the St. V-M game, freshman Ellis Thompson scored in the final 20 seconds. On Oct. 30, the Knights won the sectional championship against Medina Highland 1-0. Junior Kyle Riggenbach scored the winning goal against the Hornets. "It felt so good to beat Medina Highland," Riggenbach said. "We played hard and had fun." The Knights won the regional semifinal match Nov. 2 against the Maumee Panthers. The final score was 3-2 in double overtime, thanks to a free kick by junior Mac Woods. Woods was the leading scorer for the season and team captain. "We improved from last year," Woods said. "It was hard to lose in the last minutes against Revere. We will come back next year and go even further."
