By Kate Gibson

Caitlin Murphy
The Bow-Tie Cinemas theater Movieland attracts new customers.

Take one standard historic warehouse. Now refurbish it, add 17 stadium-seated theaters, and a popcorn machine. Oh yeah, and a café and live performances every other weekend. And Movieland is born. Located in downtown Richmond, Movieland, which opened in Feb., aspires to create a new cinematic experience beyond the standard snacks and a film. "We try to play movies that other theaters don’t. We show foreign films and independent movies as well as the major blockbusters," general manager Sean McIntosh said. If classic films like "The Wizard of Oz" are more your style, Movieland shows classics during an event called Movies and Mimosas every Sat. and Sun. morning at 11 a.m. For the cult classics fans, Insomnia Theater satisfies cravings every Fri. and Sat. night starting at 11:30 p.m., showing movies such as "A Clockwork Orange." Also, a live cast performs a stage presentation of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" every other weekend. Along with an eclectic movie line-up, the theater also offers extended menu items such as personal pan pizzas, chicken tenders, and smoothies in the café area. All food items can be brought into the theaters to accompany movie-goers during feature films. And to make customers even more comfortable, "We don’t show ads of any kind in the theater," McIntosh said. "There are no commercials or slideshows before the movie." The building, previously used to manufacture steam locomotives, keeps the urban ambiance that is present in the surrounding area. According to junior Anna Shcherbakova, the interior had "an antique sense. They had old bricks from the warehouse inside." "I like their seats," Shcherbakova said. "They move back and forth. It was pretty clean and nice inside, too." Though the extension of the Bow-Tie Cinema franchise has its perks, it also has its downfalls. Freshman Charlie Aylor noted that the tickets cost more for movies in 3D, and senior Virginia Wilson added, "They don’t give you a student discount unless you’re in college." But despite increased movie costs, students still enjoy the new location. "[Movieland] had different aspects that definitely weren’t your standard run-of-the-mill movie theater experience," senior Chase Glover said.
