FFA Holds Farm Safety Day

http://my.highschooljournalism.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/1831/articleid/524979/ffa_holds_farm_safety_day.aspx

By Co-Editor Breana Stodden

Safety is very important, especially when living or working on a farm. Students should be taught different safety procedures so they will be less likely to injure themselves on a farm. On April 26, the Cameron High School FFA students held a Farm Safety Day for the third and fourth grade students. It was set up at the Recreation Park with different stations for the kids to rotate to. There were FFA members in charge of each station. Each station taught the students about different safety procedures. One of the stations was about ATV Safety. FFA Vice President Corey Simmons was in charge of it. He said, “I did ATV Safety; I taught them the impact of safety equipment when riding ATVs and how to properly ride one.” There were about ten different stations set up. Some of them included: Home Alone, Knife Safety, Sun Safety, Hidden Hazards, and Bicycle Safety. The groups rotated to each of the stations and learned about the different hazards that are involved and how you can avoid them. Corey’s favorite part was being able to teach the kids about safety on the farm and knowing they will be less likely to hurt themselves because they learned about safety at each station. FFA members who weren’t working a station were in charge of a group of students. They lead the students to the different stations and helped make sure they behaved. FFA Member Shaylee Clardy was the leader of a fourth grade group. She said all the students were pretty well behaved and seemed to learn a lot. They had fun and enjoyed each of the different stations. One of the things her group really enjoyed was the speech given by Josh Edwards (former graduate of Cameron) and Danielle Watt before the students went to the different stations. Josh Edwards had 88% of his body burned with third degree burns. This happened while pouring diesel on a bonfire. His girlfriend Danielle was by him and had 35% of her body burned. They talked to the kids about fire safety and the importance of being careful and having adult supervision. Their speeches not only made the elementary school students listen up, but the high school students did too. Shaylee said, “His story made me want to cry. It was really sad and it makes me think a lot about fires and how to be safer around them. It was very important they came and talked, because the kids are going to grow up and will want to do bonfires, and now they’ll know to be careful. With Josh and Danielle’s story they’ll probably be extremely careful around fires now.” One of the students who liked the story and is going to be more careful around fires now is Third Grader Mackenzie Williams. She said, “My favorite part of Farm Safety Day was getting to listen to the fire story. I liked it because it taught me the dangers of fires and how to be safer around them.” Mackenzie said she also enjoyed the other stations and wants to have Farm Safety Day again next year. “I thought it was really cool and fun, and it taught me a lot about safety,” she said. All the students seemed to have a great time and really enjoyed the day. Most of them even learned a lot from these stations. The FFA members and elementary students hope to continue this fun teaching event for years to come.
