By Stephanie Wolfe, Staff Writer

At 8:00 AM, the Marcus Whitman gymnasium stood somber and still, but as forty five minutes passed, the gymnasium unquestionably filled with school spirit. The drum line stood still and tapped out beats, the cheerleaders and the band prepared for their show and the students with school pride on display filed into their proper spots with the anticipation of a day filled with events. Music began to play from the speakers, and the seniors walked in from the far double doors of the gym. The underclassmen and school faculty gave the seniors a standing ovation as they realized that this was their last pep-rally. After the tears were shed, it was all business from all of the classes. Cheers such as “We’ve Got Spirit” and “We Want Jug” were the name of the game. Cheerleaders flew in the air; students chanted vociferously and school spirit was evident. When asked if the pep-rally had met her expectations, freshman Claudia Coleates answered, “It was a lot more fun that I anticipated. It totally blew my expectations of what it was going to be like.” Sophomore Brooke Helker had her own opinions of this year’s homecoming compared to last years. “This year, my classmates were more spirited and had way more confidence going into field day. We thought we had a shot at the jug!” Modified, Junior Varsity, and Varsity athletes were accredited for their hard work and commitment for their seasons. The varsity girl’s soccer team chanted, the varsity girl’s tennis team threw tennis balls into the crowds and the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders performed their competition routines. All the while, the school mascot danced about and cheered for his classmates. This day is not to give students a break from school. This day is to bring us closer and put forth our team work skills. Field day consists of many events, which are granted a certain point value, and the class with the highest accumulated points at the end of all of the events wins The Jug. The jug is a Marcus Whitman tradition that consists of simply that, a jug, but with this jug comes bragging rights for the entire year of the winning class. For the 2008/2009 school year, the senior class was presented the jug with just a slight win over the juniors. Congratulations to all the classes on their hard work and making another field day enjoyable for all.
