By Stephanie Satrape

Changes are in store for seniors at Hoover High School. Starting with the class of 2011, there will no longer be class rankings for everyone. Guidance counselor Mrs. Judy Hoover served on the board that made the decision to change the ranking system. “We’ve become increasingly aware that class rank hurts our students because of the competitive nature of our school; that is why we made the change,” Hoover said. In order to continue to reap the rewards of class rank and not punish those whom class rank benefits, the top five percent of the senior class will still be given ranks to strengthen their applications. Any student not included in the top five percent will be able to write on their applications that the school does not rank. “Without a class rank on the application, schools will be forced to look beyond the number and make a decision based on other aspects of the student,” Hoover said. According to Hoover, it is not unusual for schools not to rank. In fact, many competitive schools, like Hoover, do not rank their students. Along with the absence of class ranks, there will no longer be a Top 25 Academic Honors Banquet. Instead, there will be a Summa Celebration. This will include a series of honors to recognize students that excel in academics. The Summa Celebration will be made up of students from three designations: the Summa designation (GPA of 4.325 or higher), the Magna designation (4.0-4.32499), and the Cum Laude designation (3.75-3.99). The new honors are being enacted with the hopes that more students will be honored for their success in high school, and also because it is similar to the way colleges honor students. “We feel that the students that fall into these categories deserve recognition for their hard work,” Hoover said
