Cleverbot: Talking Computer

http://my.highschooljournalism.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/1201/articleid/325834/cleverbot_talking_computer.aspx

By Jared Ijams and John Lindahl

Cleverbot: Talking Computer By: Jared Ijams and John Lindahl Have any of you heard of the Cleverbot? Well, I recommend trying it. The website basically consists of you having a conversation with a computer that responds to every message you send to it. The computer picks up phrases that other people say to it, and sorts it out and sends it to you to continue the conversation. Sometimes the Cleverbot’s response does not make sense, but still it gets a good laugh out of you. During one of my conversations with it, I was left speechless at how amazing this device is. The Cleverbot picks up phrases that other people say, and puts it into a conversation. Basically, it learns from what people say to it. Another thing that is hilarious about the Cleverbot is that it always denies that it is a computer. Also, it always calls the person it’s talking to a computer. If you try to convince it otherwise, it will just deny it and call you a computer. It’s very rare if you can convince that the computer is a computer, but when you do, you feel very victorious. I always question myself about these feelings because it makes me think to myself, “Why am I so happy. I just convinced a computer that it’s a computer.” And then I actually laugh to myself. My friend Jared actually had a conversation with it and he recorded it. Notice how the computer is very on topic, or very off topic. Also, notice how Jared tries to have a normal conversation with the Cleverbot, and how the Cleverbot completely changes the subject. Here is Jared’s conversation with the Cleverbot. User: Hey. Cleverbot: Hey what? User: Do you like cheeseburgers? Cleverbot: I love cheeseburgers. User: What's your favorite restaurant to get it from? Cleverbot: Mazzios. User: Where’s that. Cleverbot: Do you believe in the Buddha? EXAMPLE 2 User: What’s up? Cleverbot: You are a computer. User: No, you are a computer. Cleverbot: You misunderstand. You are an internet chat site. User: Ditto. Cleverbot: Wrong again. User: Shut up. Cleverbot: I’m leaving. I’m sorry, but the Cleverbot is currently indisposed, due to extreme anger directed at your extremely ugly face. As you can see, the computer always denies that it’s a computer. But the amazing thing is the computer actually has feelings, due to the bold print above. The Cleverbot site was fun to research because of how it is actually clever, but not so clever when it denies it’s a computer program.
