By Courtney O'Brien

Yahoo

1.) Passports- If I have to go to the bathroom, I have to go to the bathroom- whether you sign my agenda or not, whether my spaces are all filled up, whether it’s the first or last ten minutes of class, whether I have gone more than your “three times a semester only rule.” It is ridiculous that we have to get permission to go to the bathroom, since we are not four years old anymore. We can handle the walk to the bathroom and back all by ourselves. However, I understand those rules are set in place for those who abuse the privileges, but I don’t think that is fair to the rest of us. Only those people should have to get a pass, or suffer other consequences like detention, not everyone. 2.) The Now Junior/Senior Parking Lot- Yes, finally a senior! Top of the class, head of the school, almost out of here, senior privileges, yes! But wait... the senior lot doesn’t exist anymore.. even though construction is and has been done this entire year.. Seriously, what the heck! The walk from the junior lot (key word JUNIOR) is an unnecessary hike. That’s not fair because all the previous senior classes got to park behind the cafeteria. There are not even that many teachers, 20 some spots are empty everyday, which I understand are reserved for substitutes and student interns, but still! There is enough parking in close proximity to the school for at least the early bird seniors to get a good spot. Student interns and subs should park in the auxiliary lot; technically, they are visitors, and that's what that parking lot is reserved for. If anything, the teachers should have to walk farther because they actually get paid to come here, students don’t. 3.) Freshmen- I feel like I should be babysitting half the people that go here. I know I’m small and pretty much blend in with most freshman, but they act like they know everything! No, you’re barely even a high school-er, and you’re not cool-so don’t try to be. The age difference between seniors and freshman is just too large. It’s just that 17-18 year olds don’t want to be around 13-14 year olds because we feel a lot more mature than them, even though we’re really not. I wish we could go back to the good old days when middle school was 6th through 9th grade. 4.) Prison-like rules- As a senior we are either already 18, or close to it. And we STILL get treated like we’re in elementary school! Yeah we’re immature (especially the boys)-- I’ll give BCPS that one, but some rules set in place here are ridiculous anyway. Why can’t we leave when we want to? At 18 you are technically an adult, so you should be able to go home if you need to in an emergency or something, but, nope, not allowed. Going to the bathroom without permission? Yeah, right. We aren’t even allowed to stand up during lunch without someone telling us to sit down. Plus rules in certain classes like no eating or wearing hats, WHY! I am hungry and I want to wear this hat I spent $20 on, it will not affect or harm the teacher in anyway. 5.) Healthy cafeteria food- This one isn’t a jab at Catonsville High specifically, but more at federal law and the entire school system because they control the cafeteria menu. Lunch is the only part of the day we look forward to, so why does the food have to be so horrible! It used to actually be good; I loved buying lunch freshman year, but it has gone way down hill since then. If we all cared about eating healthy, we would bring our own food, like a salad or an apple. Why sell only baked chips, whole wheat bread, and other nasty food? Bring back normal chips, normal bread, and normal food! It would bring the cafeteria more profit, so it’s a win-win. 6.) Overcrowded- Seriously, this problem has been an issue at CHS forever; there are too many students attending this school! You can’t even move in the hallways, and if you’re like me, you get all mad and start yelling and pushing people. That is how fights happen. Not good. But seriously why does no one know how to walk in this school... Dear obnoxious people who stand in the middle of the hallway to converse, MOVE. 7.) Cliques- Not every AP student is conceited, but some are. Just because you’re “advanced-ly placed” doesn’t mean you’re better than everyone else! I swear certain AP kids won’t even talk to people they think they’re smarter than, which is pretty much everyone. News flash: AP classes are choices, so taking them doesn’t make you any more special than standard kids. No one is impressed. Second, “Lax bros”- “ ‘sup bra” “lax or die” “”yes boy” “ let’s get smashed this weekend” ...please stop talking. It seems like the students here don’t ever associate with anyone outside of their initial group, which is the most annoying thing about cliques. Standard classes, however, are my favorite because all of the people taking those classes are nice and talk to anyone, They aren’t snooty and judgemental like AP students, lax bros, or popular people. It seems that at CHS the more smart you are, the more self absorbed you are. 8.) The Bathrooms- Our bathrooms are gross a lot more often than they should be. Also, the handicapped stalls in the girls bathrooms are so strategically placed behind sinks, so that when the door opens out, you hit the person in front of you washing their hands. Plus, the sinks never get warm, so you have to wash your hands in icy cold water. The generic toilet paper/paper towels have absolutely no absorbency ability. Every time I go in one of the bathrooms at least one toilet is clogged, and urine is sometimes all over the seats in the other stalls; how does that even happen? 9.) Teachers Who Use Busy Work- Coloring?? Really?? Are we two? I don’t see any use in coloring in high school .. We don’t learn anything except how to stay in the lines, which isn’t even a requirement! And how about just reading a textbook and answering question packets all period? I cannot sit there for 90 minutes doing mindless busy work; it is a waste of my life. Believe it or not, I’d rather listen to the teacher teach than feel like I just wasted the period doing busy work. 10.) Blocked Websites- How are we supposed to research anything if we can’t use any websites! I understand why Facebook and other social media websites are blocked, but educational websites? Really? When we are assigned in-class Powerpoints and research projects, we can’t access any information because all of the websites are blocked! Look, we can see all of these same websites at home, but we don’t have the teacher there. I mean if BCPS doesn’t want us to do work, that’s cool, too.. Runner ups: 11.) Condescending adults. 12.) You can’t get inside until 7:20 a.m., even if it’s freezing or raining. 13.) Bipolar temperatures, either freezing or warm depending on classroom. 14.) Inner new building classrooms without windows..basically prison cells. 15.) Teachers almost never hole-punch papers. Lazy! 16.) The ONLY good cafeteria food (Clux Deluxe sandwiches) are $3! That’s more than Chik-Fil-A! 17.) Girls can’t expose their shoulders....but guys can expose their gluteus maximus... 18.) There aren’t escalators. 19.) No dress code against heavy-set people wearing leggings, yoga pants, and anything else tight. 20.) Not being allowed to order food to be delivered here, or to leave to get food during lunch. 21.) Uncomfortable seats in the auditorium. 22.) Horrible smell emitting from the locker rooms. 23.) The traffic jams between breezeways. 24.) The recent interest of uneducated seniors in politics, mostly regarding Obama’s presidency. 25.) The black science department tables that are too old and dented that you can’t write without punching a hole in your paper. 26.) Not enough bleachers in Comet stadium. (no specific order)
